Owen

“Owen, what are you doing up so early?”

I jump at the sound of Daisy’s voice. Blinking rapidly as I peel my eyes away from the computer screen, I find Daisy standing in the threshold between the hallway and living room. Shit, I’ve been so focused on what I was doing, I hadn’t noticed her moving around in the small window in the corner of my screen. As discreetly as possible, I type a few buttons and the little window of her bedroom disappears.

Dressed in a simple tee shirt, ripped jeans, and a flannel wrapped around her waist, she looks ready to start her day.

“Just getting some work done.”

She moves toward me. “What are you working on?”

Not sure how long I was going to be up, I’d let Drake take the second guest room last night while I worked on the couch. Now, I regret it. My back is sore from sitting in the same position for hours. I roll my head to release the tension in my neck as she sits down beside me.

“Wyatt asked if I could look into the people you want to, ah, take out, so I have.”

“Oh, like what you did for George Herring?”

I nod even as my stomach flips. Before hunting him down to kill the man, I’d gone ahead and searched through George Herring’s digital footprint and uncovered how devious the man was. I thought hiding babies from the government after their birth, helping kill them in cold blood for a god that doesn’t exist, and then performing surgeries on their bodies would be the most disgusting thing I would unearth.

Turns out that our next hit, Vincent Callaway, is just as cold-blooded and disgusting as George was.

“You should’ve gotten some sleep,” she murmurs, resting her head on my shoulder. My heart does a somersault. “We did a lot yesterday.”

“I just wanted to get a jump start on the work ahead of us.”

Daisy hums, noncommittally.

I wrap my arm around her shoulders and pull her closer. “What are you doing up at—” I glance at the time on my laptop screen “—six-thirty in the morning?”

“Bad dreams.”

I hold her tighter. “About last night?”

“No.”

I wait for a moment, but Daisy doesn’t elaborate.

“You know,” I hedge carefully. “Talking about things can help sometimes. I know it can be painful to do, but if you ever need an ear…”

Daisy sits up and meets my gaze with a hard glare. “I don’t need an ear, I need revenge.”

“We’re working on it.” I drop my arm from around her shoulders to take one of her hands. “Would you like to see what I’ve uncovered on Vincent Callaway? It’s pretty huge.”

Daisy’s smile brightens her face. “Show me.”

I turn the screen toward her and point to the excel sheets I have up. “Last night I managed to slip past all of Vincent’s security measures he has in place for his financial files. He has a ton of them, but I managed to sort through the Eveningstar accounts, you know the bank he runs here in Briar Glen, and his own personal accounts.
